My overall consensus is that the artefacts for the themes of power, memory and spectacle are good enough to show what is meant by them in a broad sense.  Through the research the artefacts we born and deliver if not precise information on the topic at least a decent enough idea about what they stand for and how they work.

The knowledge I have gained through working with these themes has made me think of media in different ways.   It has made me see that media is biased towards what they show us and very restrictive even though in this modern age we supposedly have all this access to information.  Through this process I have learnt to experiment with different software such as Adobe After Affects, with this new understanding I will be able to make much improvements on my work for my final project.

Memory Artefact

Original proposal-

My idea is to simply film myself with shades on, I will split the screen at the bridge of the nose, each lens of the glasses will represent collective memory and personal memory.  Using Adobe After effects I will zoom into the lenses to other pictures and video clips pertaining to collective and personal memory, the sound will overlap so whilst one is playing vocals the other will play instruments.  I will only show half the face until it zooms in then you will see the other half and by the time you will know which lens is displaying what.

The video has changed as it is no longer me in the film but instead the face of a cat, the memories a placed semi-transparent on the eyes of the cat.  Each memory shows a time in history that is a public memory that people will know about or at least have heard of.

Spectacle Artefact

I have decided to change my original idea into a simpler one that hopefully will be understandable to everyone.  I have decided to use wrestling as example for my spectacle piece. Wrestling uses spectacle constantly to attract there world wide audiences.  Of course it is all fake and very well scripted, but in our minds we want to believe that the characters portrayed on the screen are real, but it is so interwoven into our lives that we let it go.  Using bright light, huge budgets, massive arenas, actors and the media they put on a show that you cant help but watch.

Power Artefact

This idea will not have any audio narration it will be simply a series of images and text that will evoke powerful thoughts to mind.  The text will be large or bold so that it will attract the viewers attention also the images will be on the screen on for a short amount of time, so the next image that is displayed must be stronger so as to reinforce the power set down by the first image.  The full minute will be full of media that is stronger until the end, where there will be no fade out but the film will come abruptly to a halt, hopefully this will leave the audience dazed and slightly shocked.

The example of the evaluation I have chosen is from my power theme-

The images I chose because they related to the theme of power and were the kind of images that would mainly show humanity at its worst, except for the beginning few pictures.

“Power is not an institution, and not a structure; neither is it a certain strength we are endowed with; it is the name that one attributes to a complex strategical situation in a particular society.”

The example I have chosen for my reflection is from my Memory piece-

In my video I explored the different types of public memories, the sort of thing that everyone can get to, therefore they can all talk about the event or whatever event has captured the attention of the public to be talked about.

“As the archeology of our thought easily shows, man is an invention of recent date. And one perhaps nearing its end.”

The things that I have gained from my research-

  • power plays an important role in everything but sometimes is not constantly needed.
  • A spectacle of whatever description has to be the centre piece and shine brighter than any other content, it has to attract as many people as possible.
  • Memory is a key player in joining the other two, memory makes sure the viewer remembers the situation and the importance of it.  Memories can also be altered via the media representation of the thing in question and how we the viewer perceive it.

Many of the things that we see on the TV use the themes of power, memory and spectacle. They use them in ways that are subtle so we don’t even know why we feel the way we do after watching something or reading about it, we just know about them on a surface level but when we dig deeper we notice all sorts of mechanisms to guide us and affect us in a myriad of different ways.

These are my examples of the research that I had to do as part of my project.

A new study suggests that marketers shouldn’t fixate on the number of people who click on ads. According to the research, just seeing an ad on a Web page can impact memory.

this was for my memory project.

“Vienna welcomes MotoGP spectacle

Wednesday, 11 August 2010

Riders from all three classes of the World Championship displayed their bikes to fans in the Austrian capital, as bike enthusiasts turned out in force to catch a glimpse of their heroes.”

The article is a different sort of spectacle as it is a huge event which thousands have come to watch, allot of money and time has gone into making this a spectacle, something for people to watch and enjoy. Most of it has to get there attention, make them want to look, tempt them.

As you have noticed this is a example of my research for my spectacle piece.

The above link is for a website that has many speeches and famous quotes from movies and renouned political figures, whether they be from this country or the next.  These things are powerful because in the time they made a change, so that we could have the life we have today.

This is an example of my research towards my power piece.

The link above shows you how much the average voter has in the area of Hall Green.  The vote is important as it gives the public a chance to choose who they would like in power, but what is the average vote worth?

The average UK voter has 1.54x more voting power than voters in Birmingham Hall Green.”

This website show you power throughout the ages by highlighting historic figures and what they did to gain power and how they retained it.  It also shows how the use of power these figures is related to ones status in the world.  It also gives you an insight in the forms that power takes in modern times compared the leaders and politicians of old.

This shows the most powerful women in history, whether it be power that comes from wealth or the type one has earnt through politics and hard work.

The meaning of the work I have produced for this project was to show the affects of power, memory and spectacle.  It showed the nasty side of power as that is the bit that gets showed through the media, people been made to do things, the horrors of warfare used as propaganda to support the troops.  Also it ties in with spectacle as people cant help but look because of the content that is shocking and stuns them as they sometimes cannot believe what they are seeing.  Both of them make up the memory as the power is needed to make sure specific parts are remembered and force out the details which could be dangerous, the spectacle that makes people watch imprints itself onto the mind of the viewer giving them a a talking point, so they can talk to other about it.
